When you think of one meal,
what sort of dishes would you have on the table?

 

 

 

伝統的な日本の食事なら、

（でんとうてきな　にほんの　しょくじなら）

ご飯とみそ汁と焼き魚などがあるでしょう。

（ごはんと　みそしると　やきざかななどが　あるでしょう）

 

If it is a traditional Japanese meal,
you would probably have rice, miso-soup and grilled fish etc.

 

 

では、その中で、「主食」と呼ばれるものは、どれだと思いますか。

（では、そのなかで、「しゅしょく」と　よばれているものは、どれだとおもいますか）

 

Now, which one of them do you think is called "Shushoku", the "main food"?

 

「焼き魚だ！」と思いましたか。

（やきざかなだ！と　おもいましたか）

確かに、毎日必ずあるご飯やみそ汁と違い、

（たしかに、まいにち　かならず　ある　ごはんや　みそしると　ちがい）

焼き魚はその食事にとって特別な存在です。

（やきざかなは、そのしょくじにとって　とくべつな　そんざいです）

 

Certainly, the fish is special in this meal
as you would always have rice and miso-soup.

 

しかし、日本語で「主食」と言ったら、この食事の場合はご飯です。

（しかし、にほんごで、「しゅしょく」と　いったら、　このしょくじの　ばあいは、ごはんです）

毎日必ずテーブルにあり、他と変えられないので、大切な物、

（まいにち　かならず　テーブルに　あり、ほかと　かえられないので　たいせつな　もの）

｢主」の物と考えられています。

（「しゅ」のものと　かんがえられています）

 

However, if you say "Shushoku" in Japanese,
you mean the rice in this meal.
The rice is considered as un-changable thing, meaning important thing,
therefore it is called "shushoku", the "main food".

 

焼き魚のように、「主」の物を食べるために合わせる料理を｢副食」と言います。

（やきざかなの　ように、「しゅ」のものを　たべるために　あわせる　りょうりを　「ふくしょく」と　いいます）

 

As for the fish, it is considered as the thing you need to enjoy the rice,
and it is called "hukushoku", the "sub food".

 

例えば、パンとスープと肉の食事だったら、

（たとえば、ぱんと　すーぷと　にくの　しょくじだったら）

主食がパンで、副食が肉です。

（しゅしょくが　ぱんで、ふくしょくが　にくです）

 

If you have bread, soup and meat, "shushoku", the main is the bread,
and "hukushoku", the sub is meat.

 

 

 

特別な物を「主」と見るか、いつもあるものを「主」と見るか、

（とくべつなものを　「しゅ」とみるか、いつもあるものを　「しゅ」とみるか）

色々な見方があって、面白いですね！
