Japanese summer custom,Obon.

東京(とうきょう)は、もうすぐお盆(ぼん)です。　

Obon is coming soon in Tokyo.

東京(とうきょう)などでは、7月(がつ)に行(おこな)いますが、

他(ほか)の地域(ちいき)では8月(がつ)にすることが多(おお)いです。

We have Obon on July in Tokyo and some areas,

 but it is basically held in August in other areas.

 

これは、明治時代(めいじじだい)に暦(こよみ)を変更(へんこう)したときに、

東京(とうきょう)では新暦(しんれき)に合(あ)わせて日程(にってい)を7月(がつ)ずらし、

他(ほか)の地域(ちいき)では、

旧暦(きゅうれき)の時期(じき)に合(あ)わせて

8月(がつ)に残(のこ)したためです。

The reason the difference about the Obon schedule is that

when we changed our calendar

from lunar-solar calendar to solar calendar in Meiji period,

we adjusted Obon schedule to new calendar in Tokyo.

 However we have been keeping the same season in other areas.

 

お盆(ぼん)とは？

What is Obon…?

 

先祖(せんぞ)の魂(たましい)を家(いえ)に迎(むか)える習(なら)わしです。

The tradition that we welcome our ancestors’ spirits to our home.

 

「魂(たましい)が帰(かえ)ってくる」という点(てん)では、

ハロウィーンやメキシコの死者(ししゃ)の日(ひ)に似(に)ているかもしれません。

The spirits come back, so it might be similar custom to Halloween or

 Día de Muertos in Mexico.

 

どうやって迎(むか)えるの？

How do we welcome our spirits of ancestors?

 お盆(ぼん)の最初(さいしょ)の日(ひ)の夕方(ゆうがた)に、

「迎(むか)え火(び)」と呼(よ)ばれる火(ひ)をたいて、

ご先祖様(せんぞさま)の魂(たましい)を家(いえ)に迎(むか)えます。

In the evening on the first day in Obon, generally on 13^th of July or 13^th of August, we make a fire which is called　”Mukae-bi” to welcome the spirits.

お盆(ぼん)の間(あいだ)は、ご先祖様(せんぞさま)にお供(そな)え物(もの)をしたり、

特別(とくべつ)な飾(かざ)りつけをしたりして、

ご先祖様(せんぞさま)をおもてなしします。

We give our ancestors hospitality

such as making special decorations

and make an offering to them during Obon period.

 

 

例(たと)えば、精霊馬(しょうりょううま）

The horses which the ancestors ride.

 

きゅうりとなすをつくります。

We make them with cucumbers and eggplants.

 

 

 きゅうりの馬(うま)は、ご先祖様(せんぞ)が早(はや)く家(いえ)に帰(かえ)って

来(こ)られるようにという願(ねが)いを表(あらわ)しています。

Cucumber horse describes our wish

that the ancestors can come home quickly.

 

一方(いっぽう)でなすは牛(うし)を意味(いみ)しており、

牛(うし)に乗(の)ってゆっくり帰(かえ)って

もらえるようにという願(ねが)いが込(こ)められているというのが一般的(いっぱんてき)です。

On the other hand, eggplant means cows

and represent our wish

that the spirits can go back to their graves slowly.

 

そして、最後(さいご)の日(ひ)の夕方(ゆうがた)には、

送(おく)り火(び)をたいて、魂(たましい)を送(おく)り出(だ)します。

In the evening on the last day, generally in 16^th of July or 16^th of August,

we make a fire”Okuri-bi” to send the spirits back to their graves.

Some areas and communities have their own customs.

  

魂(たましい)が家(いえ)に帰(かえ)ってくるため、

お盆(ぼん)は家族(かぞく)が集(あつ)まる機会(きかい)となり、

多(おお)くの日本企業(にほんきぎょう)はお休(やす)みとなります。

Hence the spirits come back home,

Obon is an opportunity of family gathering,

 therefore many companies in Japan offer vacation to their employees.

 

故郷(こきょう)に帰(かえ)る人(ひと)もいれば、

旅行(りょこう)に出(で)かける人(ひと)もいます。

Some people get back to their hometowns

and some people go travel.
