Today is "Culture Day"...
"Culture" affects people's mind a lot, don't you think?
The awareness that most of the nation shares is called "Kokuminsei" in Japanese.

In Japan, we have a organization called "Institute of statistical Mathematics",
and they research about "Kokuminsei" of Japanese nation by asking questions like
"What do you think is the good point of Japanese people?" or
"How do you think Japanese lives their life?" to Japanese people.

The latest survey was conducted in 2013, and the result was announced the other day.

First, to the question "What do you think is the good points of Japanese people?",
more than 70% answered "hard-working" (77%), "polite" (77%) and "kind" (71%).

Then, to the question "how do you think Japanese people live their life?",
there were more people who answered "trying to help others",
than the people who answered "thinking only about selves"
for the first time since they started their research.
Institute of statistical Mathematics  thinks this is because many people see
that people helping each other after the Tohoku Earthquake.

On the other hand,
to the question "Do you think you will reach a good result by making effort?",
26%, which is 10% more than 5 years ago, answered
"No, effort does not always promise a good result".

Also, to the question "Did you anyhow feel stressful this past month?",
there were more people who answered "Yes" (50%),
than the people who answered "No" (49%),
again, for the first time since they stareted their research,

This is my personal opinion but,
being "hard-working" is nice but it could be "stressful" at the same time.
Recently, in the internationalized society, we have many opportunities to learn different values
by meeting the people from overseas.
It would be good if we can exchange good aspects of each other...

tea is important in Japan too!

Mornings and nights are getting colder.
During Summer, I tend to drink more juice, but
in this season of the year, hot tea tastes better.
Today, I introduce you the idioms with "tea"!

お茶(ちゃ)の子(こ)さいさい:a piece of cake

The sweets served with green tea is small and easy to eat.
eg: Making a bowl is a piece of cake for him being a potter.

お茶(ちゃ)を濁(にご)す:throw dust in one's eyes

This is how a person who does not know about tea ceremony well
cheats the customer by making tea in non-proper way.
eg: He got out of the situation by giving a vague answer.

Even coarse tea tastes good when freshly-brewed.
Likewise, even homely girl look beautiful at the peak of her youth.
eg: My daughter look beautiful these days just because
she is now at the age that everyone looks beautiful.
It is tipical to say bad things about one's own family member in Japan,
but it does not mean that they do not love their family!!!!

It is impossible that the navel boils water for making tea.
eg: You promise you pay me back tomorrow even though
you don't have any concrete hope? Yeah, and pigs might fly.

This is how making tea at battle field is unnecessary and even annoying.
eg: I am talking seriously. Don't kibits from the sidelines.

There are many! It shows how tea is important in Japanese culture!

harvest moon day!

September 8th 2014 is August 15th in the lunar calendar,
and it is the harvest moon day.

We have 12 to 13 full moon days per year,
but the one we see in August of the lunar calendar (current September),
has been recognised as the most beautiful one
because the sky often clears up at this time of the year,
after the continuous rainy days.
This is why we have a custom to have moon-viewing night
on August 15th of lunar calendar.

We arrange silver grass as amulet
and offer roundy-shaped-object to the moon.
For example, dampling or taro.
Originally, it was the event to thank the harvest of the year.
Nowadays, it is the day we pray for the family's health and happiness.

By the way, on full moon day, we see
"rabits pounding mochi" on the surface of the moon.
But it seems that different countries people see different things.
It could be "crab with a big claw" or "lion".
In your country, what do you see on the full moon?

how long do you normally sleep for?

Everyday it is just too hot to sleep in Tokyo.
When someone says that he can hardly sleep,
how long would you think this person sleeps for?
Different people have different sleeping hours,
but the length of the sleeping hours is different depending on the animal, too.
Today, I will write about different animals avarage sleeping hours.

The animals sleeping for the longest hours are
the herbivores living on a tree, like koaras and sloths.
Leaves would not produce huge enargy, so they sleep a lot to save energy on the tree.

Then the carnivores sleeps for rather long hours.
Because they hardly find the animal to hunt,
and even if they did, there is no guarantee they can catch it.
Therefore, they sleep long to save energy.

Gorillas sleep for the longest hours among the primates.
Human beings sleep for the least hours among the primates.

And it is the ground carnivores who do not sleep much.
They have to eat a lot of grass to live (so no time to sleep),
and they have to keep moving so that they do not get attacked.

So, the avarage of human beings sleeping hours is 8 hours...
Please sleep well and stay genki, everyone!
