ニュースや新聞(しんぶん)の見出(みだ)しで、
「米」や、「仏」という漢字(かんじ)を見(み)たことはありませんか?
Have you seen 「米」or「仏」in the news or newspaper,
 especially in the headlines?

(たと)えば、米仏が合意(ごうい)
For example, 「米仏が合意」

米はrice、仏はBuddha、合意(ごうい)するは、agreeという意味(いみ)です。
「米」means rice,「仏」means Buddha and「合意」is agree

こめがほとけと合意(ごうい)?!?!
Rice and Buddha agree…?!?!

これは、どういう意味(いみ)なのでしょうか?
What does this mean?

(じつ)は、この「米」と「仏」は(くに)の名前(なまえ)なのです!
Actually, 「米」and「仏」 discribe country names!

米=アメリカ the USA
仏=フランス France

日本(にほん)や中国(ちゅうごく)、韓国(かんこく)は漢字(かんじ)で書(か)きますが、
(ほか)の国(くに)も漢字(かんじ)で書(か)くことができます。
We have Kanji for Japan, China and Korea,
but we can write other country names as well.

France
フランス=仏蘭西→仏(ふつ)

フランスは、漢字(かんじ)「仏蘭西」と書(か)きます。
We write France「仏蘭西」by Kanji.

見出(みだ)しでは、最初(さいしょ)の字(じ)の「仏」のみで表(あらわ)すことが多(おお)いです。
In the headlines, we use only the first character「仏」basically.

(よ)み方(かた)は、「ふつ」です。
The pronunciation is “Futsu”, it is not  ”Hotoke” in this case.

ニュースでよく見(み)る漢字(かんじ)の国名(くにめい)と略省(りゃくしょう)はこちら。
This is the list of the names of country by Kanji and the abbreviation
which we frequently see in the headlines.

            The USA

The reason we use「米」for the USA, not「亜」is that we use「亜」for Asia.

漢字(かんじ)の意味(いみ)ではなく、発音(はつおん)をもとに漢字(かんじ)が選(えら)ばれています
These Kanji were chosen by the pronunciation, not the meaning of Kanji.

つまり、「米仏が合意」は、アメリカとフランスが合意(ごうい)した という意味(いみ)になります。
Therefore, 「米仏が合意」means the USA and French(government) agreed.

how to write nengajo, the new years card!

クリスマスが終わり、今年もあと5日しかありません!
(くりすますが おわり、ことしも あと いつか しか ありません)

日本では、年賀状を書く時期です。
(にほんでは、ねんがじょうを かく じき です)

みなさんは、どんな新年の挨拶をしますか。
(みなさんは、どんな しんねんの あいさつを しますか)

今日は、日本の年賀状の書き方をご紹介します!
(きょうは、にほんの ねんがじょうの かきかたを ごしょうかいます)

Christmas has gone and now we have only 5 days to the year-end.
It is the time to write new-years-cards in Japan.
How do you greet people for the new year in your country?
I will introduce you how to write a Japanese style new-years-card today.

Year of Sheep!!

First, you write Gashi, the celebration word, largely.
There are many different Gashi.
For example, "respectfully, celebrate the new year" or
"reverentially celebrate the new spring" are common ones.
"Celebration on new years day" and "Welcome Spring" are Gashi, too,
but you do not want to use short Gashi to your superiors. It is less polite.
"Happy new year" is also Gashi.
You should have one Gashi on one nengajo.
If you write "あけましておめでとう" after "謹賀新年",
then that is redundant. Please be careful!

次に、2014年にお世話になったことを感謝して、
(つぎに、2014ねんに おせわになったことを かんしゃして)

2015年にお世話になる事にも感謝して、
(2015ねんに おせわになることにも かんしゃして)

相手の幸せや健康を祈ります。
(あいての しあわせや けんこうを いのります)

Then, you thank the person for their kindness through the year 2014,
you thank the person in advance for the continual friendship in year 2015,
then wish the person's good health and good luck.
You may write something like....
「昨年中(さくねんちゅう)は、たいへんおせわになりました。
本年(ほんねん)も、どうぞよろしくおねがいいたします。
みなさまのご健康(けんこう)とご多幸(たこう)をお祈(いの)りします。」

それから、絵があると、きれいです。
(それから、えが あると きれいです)

干支の動物や
(えとの どうぶつや)

松竹梅など縁起のいい植物の絵がいいです。
(しょうちくばいなど えんぎのいい しょくぶつの えが いいです)

Then, if you could have a picture, it will make the card beautiful.
The animal of the year or
auspicious plants like pine tree, bamboo tree and plum tree would be good.

最後に、少し近況を書いて、
(さいごに、すこし きんきょうを かいて)

2015年元旦と書いて、出来上がりです!
(2015ねん がんたんと かいて、できあがりです!)

At last, you may write a little about your news,
and put "2015 Jan. 1st". It is done!

みなさん、よい年末をお過ごしくださいね!
(みなさん、よい ねんまつを おすごしくださいね!)

Please have a very good year-end, everyone!

wind, wind, wind!!

最近寒いですね。
(さいきん、さむいですね)

東京では、北風が強くなりました。
(とうきょうでは、かぜが つよく なりました)

そこで、今日は、「風」を使う慣用句をご紹介します。
(そこで、きょうは、「かぜ」を つかう かんようくを ごしょうかいします)

It has been cold these days...
The north wind has become strong in Tokyo, so
I introduce the proverbs including "wind" today.

まず、「風上に置けない」
(まず「かざかみに おけない」)

風上に悪い物があると、風下では、非常にくさいですね。
(かざかみに わるい ものが あると、かざかみでは、ひじょうに くさいですね)

それで、人に迷惑をかけるような悪い人のことを
(それで、ひとに めいわくを かけるような わるい ひとのことを)

「風上に置けない奴だ!」などと言います。
(「かざかみに おけない やつだ!」などと いいます)

First, "Cannot put it on the windward side".
If you have something bad on the windward side,
it smells badly on the leeward side.
Therefore, we look at a bad person who causes troubles,
and say "He is the one we cannot put on the windward side!",
meaning, "He is intolerable"

次に、「肩で風を切る」
(つぎに「かたで かぜを きる」)

風の向きと逆向きに勢いよく歩いている人は、自信があります。
(かぜの むきと ぎゃくむきに いきおいよく あるいている ひとは、じしんが あります)

それで、今順調で勢いのある人のことを、
(それで、いま じゅんちょうで いきおいの ある ひとの ことを)

「あの人、肩で風を切って歩いているよ」と言います。
(「あのひと、かたで かぜを きって あるいているよ」と いいます)

Next, "Cut the wind with shoulder"
The person who walks against the wind vigorously is the person who is confident.
Therefore, looking at the person who has been successful and having things progress well,
we say "He walks cutting the wind with his shoulder",
meaning "He walks with a swagger."

Also, "East wind to the horse ears"
East wind is the spring wind.
People feel happy when they feel the east wind as they know that
spring has come, but horses does not feel anything about it.
Therefore, we look at the person who never pays attention to other people's advice,
and say "Giving him an advice is like the east wind to the hourse ears",
meaning "He turns deaf ear"

さらに、「風穴を開ける」
(さらに、「かざあなを あける」)

窓のない建物に穴をあけると風が入ります。
(まどの ない たてものに あなを あけると かぜが はいります)

それで、行き詰って進む方向が見えない組織に新しい人が加わったとき、
(それで、いきづまって すすむ ほうこうが みえない そしきに あたらしい ひとが くわわったとき)

「風穴を開けてくれるだろう」などと言います。
(「かざあなを あけてくれるだろう」などと いいます)

Also, "Make a windhole"
If you make a hole on the wall of the building that does not have a window,
wind will come in.
When someone new enters the organization that has been stucked with old bad habits,
people say "He will make a windhole for them",
meaning "He will ashers a new phase"

最後に、「風邪を引く」
(さいごに 「かぜを ひく」)

風が運んでくる邪なもの、悪いものを体に引き込むと、
(かぜが はこんでくる よこしまな もの、わるいものを からだに ひきこむと)

体調が悪くなります。
(たいちょうが わるくなります)

それで、咳が出たり熱が出たりしたら、「風邪を引いちゃった」と言うのです。
(それで、せきが でたり ねつが でたりしたら、「かぜを ひいちゃった」と いうのです)

At last, "pull the bad things from the wind into body"
If you take the bad things carried by the wind into your body,
you feel sick.
Therefore, if you have cough or have fever, you say
"I have pulled the bad thing from wind",
meaning, "I have cought a cold"

みなさんは、風邪を引かないように、気をつけてくださいね!
Please take care so you don't catch cold, everyone!
