Japanese summer custom,Obon.

東京(とうきょう)は、お盆(ぼん)です。
Obon is coming soon in Tokyo.

東京(とうきょう)などでは、7月(がつ)に行(おこな)いますが、
他(ほか)の地域(ちいき)では8月(がつ)にすることが多(おお)いです。
We have Obon on July in Tokyo and some areas,
but it is basically held in August in other areas.

これは、明治時代(めいじじだい)に暦(こよみ)を変更(へんこう)したときに、
東京(とうきょう)では新暦(しんれき)に合(あ)わせて日程(にってい)を7月(がつ)ずらし、
他(ほか)の地域(ちいき)では、
旧暦(きゅうれき)の時期(じき)に合(あ)わせて
8月(がつ)に残(のこ)したためです。
The reason the difference about the Obon schedule is that
when we changed our calendar
from lunar-solar calendar to solar calendar in Meiji period,
we adjusted Obon schedule to new calendar in Tokyo.
However we have been keeping the same season in other areas.

お盆(ぼん)とは?
What is Obon…?

先祖(せんぞ)の魂(たましい)を家(いえ)に迎(むか)える習(なら)わしです。
The tradition that we welcome our ancestors’ spirits to our home.

「魂(たましい)が帰(かえ)ってくる」という点(てん)では、
ハロウィーンやメキシコの死者(ししゃ)の日(ひ)に似(に)ているかもしれません。

The spirits come back, so it might be similar custom to Halloween or
 Día de Muertos in Mexico.

どうやって迎(むか)えるの?
How do we welcome our spirits of ancestors?
 お盆(ぼん)の最初(さいしょ)の日(ひ)の夕方(ゆうがた)に、
「迎(むか)え火(び)」と呼(よ)ばれる火(ひ)をたいて、
ご先祖様(せんぞさま)の魂(たましい)を家(いえ)に迎(むか)えます。
In the evening on the first day in Obon, generally on 13th of July or 13th of August, we make a fire which is called ”Mukae-bi” to welcome the spirits.
(迎…welcome 火…fire)

お盆(ぼん)の間(あいだ)は、ご先祖様(せんぞさま)にお供(そな)え物(もの)をしたり、
特別(とくべつ)な飾(かざ)りつけをしたりして、
ご先祖様(せんぞさま)をおもてなしします。

We give our ancestors hospitality
such as making special decorations
and make an offering to them during Obon period.

例(たと)えば、精霊馬(しょうりょううま)
The horses which the ancestors ride.

きゅうりとなすをつくります。
We make them with cucumbers and eggplants.

 きゅうりの馬(うま)は、ご先祖様(せんぞ)が早(はや)く家(いえ)に帰(かえ)って
来(こ)られるようにという願(ねが)いを表(あらわ)しています。
Cucumber horse describes our wish
that the ancestors can come home quickly.

一方(いっぽう)でなすは牛(うし)を意味(いみ)しており、
牛(うし)に乗(の)ってゆっくり帰(かえ)って
もらえるようにという願(ねが)いが込(こ)められているというのが一般的(いっぱんてき)です。
On the other hand, eggplant means cows
and represent our wish
that the spirits can go back to their graves slowly.

そして、最後(さいご)の日(ひ)の夕方(ゆうがた)には、
送(おく)り火(び)をたいて、魂(たましい)を送(おく)り出(だ)します。
In the evening on the last day, generally in 16th of July or 16th of August,
we make a fire”Okuri-bi” to send the spirits back to their graves.
(送…sending)
※地域(ちいき)によって異(こと)なります。
Some areas and communities have their own customs.

魂(たましい)が家(いえ)に帰(かえ)ってくるため、
お盆(ぼん)は家族(かぞく)が集(あつ)まる機会(きかい)となり、
多(おお)くの日本企業(にほんきぎょう)はお休(やす)みとなります。
Hence the spirits come back home,
Obon is an opportunity of family gathering,
therefore many companies in Japan offer vacation to their employees.

故郷(こきょう)に帰(かえ)る人(ひと)もいれば、
旅行(りょこう)に出(で)かける人(ひと)もいます。
Some people get back to their hometowns
and some people go travel.

日本(にほん)の風習(ふうしゅう)とお盆休(ぼんやす)み楽(たの)しんでね!
We hope you will be interested in Japanese custom
 and enjoy the Obon holiday!

The spirits come back, so it might be similar custom to Halloween or Día de Muertos in Mexico.

どうやって迎えるの?

How do we welcome our spirits of ancestors?

お盆の最初の日の夕方に、「迎え火」と呼ばれる火を焚いて、ご先祖の魂を家に迎えます。

In the evening on the first day in Obon, generally on 13th of July or 13th of August, we make a fire which is called ”Mukae-bi” to welcome the spirits.

※迎 means welcome, 火 means fire.

お盆の間は、ご先祖様にお供え物をしたり、特別な飾りつけをしたりして、

ご先祖様をおもてなしします。

We give our ancestors hospitality such as making special decorations and make an offering to them during Obon period.

例えば、精霊馬(しょうりょううま)

The horses which the ancestors ride.

きゅうりとなすをつくります。

We make them with cucumbers and eggplants.

きゅうりの馬は、ご先祖様が早く家に帰って来られるようにという願いを表しており、

一方でなすは牛を意味しており、帰るときはゆっくりと行ってほしいという願いを象徴しています。

帰るときは、牛に乗ってゆっくり帰ってもらえるようにという願いが込められているというのが一般的です。

Cucumber horse describes our wish that the ancestors can come home quickly.

On the other hand, eggplant means cows and represent our wish that the spirits can go back to their grave slowly and relaxed.

そして、最後の日の夕方には、送り火を焚いて、魂を送り出します。

In the evening on the last day, generally in 16th of July or 16th of August, we make a fire”Okuri-bi” to send the spirits back to their graves.

送means sending

※地域によって異なります。

Some areas and communities have their own customs.

魂が家に帰ってくるため、お盆は家族が集まる機会となり、多くの日本企業はお休みとなります。

故郷に帰る人もいれば、旅行に出かける人もいます。

Hence the spirits come back home, Obon is an opportunity of family gathering, therefore many companies in Japan offer vacation to their employees.

Some people get back to their hometowns and some people go travel.

Country name in Kanji.

知(し)っていましたか?

Did you know?

国(くに)の名前(なまえ)を漢字(かんじ)で書(か)くことができることを。

We can write your country names in Kanji!

ニュースや新聞(しんぶん)の見出(みだ)しで、
「米」や、「仏」という漢字(かんじ)を見(み)たことはありませんか?
Have you seen 「米」or「仏」in the news or newspaper,
 especially in the headlines?

例(たと)えば、米仏が合意(ごうい)
For example, 「米仏が合意」

米はrice、仏はBuddha、合意(ごうい)するは、agreeという意味(いみ)です。
「米」means rice,「仏」means Buddha and「合意」is agree

こめがほとけと合意(ごうい)?!?!
Rice and Buddha agree…?!?!

これは、どういう意味(いみ)なのでしょうか?
What does this mean?

実(じつ)は、この「米」と「仏」は国(くに)の名前(なまえ)なのです!
Actually, 「米」and「仏」 discribe country names!

米=アメリカ the USA
仏=フランス France

日本(にほん)や中国(ちゅうごく)、韓国(かんこく)は漢字(かんじ)で書(か)きますが、
他(ほか)の国(くに)も漢字(かんじ)で書(か)くことができます。
We have Kanji for Japan, China and Korea,
but we can write other country names as well.

France
フランス=仏蘭西→仏(ふつ)

フランスは、漢字(かんじ)で「仏蘭西」と書(か)きます。
We write France「仏蘭西」by Kanji.

見出(みだ)しでは、最初(さいしょ)の字(じ)の「仏」のみで表(あらわ)すことが多(おお)いです。
In the headlines, we use only the first character「仏」basically.

読(よ)み方(かた)は、「ふつ」です。
The pronunciation is “Futsu”, it is not  ”Hotoke” in this case.

ニュースでよく見(み)る漢字(かんじ)の国名(くにめい)と略省(りゃくしょう)はこちら。
This is the list of the names of country by Kanji and the abbreviation
which we frequently see in the headlines.

            The USA

The reason we use「米」for the USA, not「亜」is that we use「亜」for Asia.

漢字(かんじ)の意味(いみ)ではなく、発音(はつおん)をもとに漢字(かんじ)が選(えら)ばれています。
These Kanji were chosen by the pronunciation, not the meaning of Kanji.

つまり、「米仏が合意」は、アメリカとフランスが合意(ごうい)した という意味(いみ)になります。
Therefore, 「米仏が合意」means the USA and French(government) agreed.
